Summer Holiday Club - 2003

Last year was the 13th year of our Summer Holiday Clubs and ‘Desert Detectives’ was another great success. We had over 60 children aged between 5 and 11 and about 40 leaders helped for part or all of the time.

The theme was very ambitious exploring all of the books of the bible within the week – each section of the bible, the Law books, History books, Wisdom books, Prophecy books, and finally the Gospels being ‘discovered’ on consecutive days.

To provide these discoveries, we had a trio of ‘explorers’ in the desert who, as part of the drama, and looking for the ‘Mighty Godsword’, found artefacts in the sand and sent them back to base where the professor (Charlotte), analysed their meaning and related them to passages in the bible. At the end of the week we had all discovered not the ‘Mighty Godsword’ but the Mighty God’s Word!!!

The drama was made even more effective by the gratefully accepted offer of the ‘temple’ scenery used by St Paul’s Howell Hill for their version held earlier in the year.

The children were entranced by the drama and the Professors stories, were introduced to Squawk the parrot, participated in games and races and made various craft items based on the daily themes including a bible bookcase.

In their groups they decorated their corners to represent their teams – all with a ‘desert’ background – Figs, Dates, Oasis, Mirage, Cacti and Palm Trees not forgetting the helpers children in the crèche who were the ‘Milk Sheiks’.

Once again the number of adult helpers enabled everyone to have fun whilst enabling all the activities to run smoothly.
