Summer Holiday Club 2006

Aaarrrhhh me hearties … another very successful holiday club. ‘Landlubbers’ was the theme and with over 90 children who filled the places within 10 days of the forms being available, the pirate theme proved very popular.

The children searched for ‘treasure’ on an island and found that the real treasure was in knowing Christ as their Lord. The drama characters were also searching for ‘treasure and through the animated antics of the characters, they found true freedom by giving up their old ways and joining the King’s navy.

The holiday club was again held on four mornings and culminated in a ‘Sausage Sizzle’ and presentation for parents and friends on the final evening.

‘Captain Book’ (as opposed to Captain Hook) ably portrayed by Charlotte provided the bible input, which this year related to the story of Paul and his letters to the Philippians.

On day one – entitled Prisoners Post, we heard about Paul being in prison and his ability to write letters to his friends in Philippi. The children in their groups made quill pens and tie dyed triangular shaped material in their group colours to be used on subsequent days as their pirate bandanas.

On day two – entitled Skull Hill we heard about Jesus, how he died and rose to new life and the children either coloured eggs or made birds from tangram eggs and also made their own treasure chests.

On day three – entitled The Light we were challenged in a world where lots of people don’t know Jesus that we should shine as lights for Him. The children made telescopes to be able to see things differently or more clearly and made lighthouses.

On day four – entitled Keep Going we heard that deciding to follow Jesus isn’t the end of the journey but just the beginning. The children made flags for their corners and a banner for the group. They also made money bags and were rewarded to find them filled with gold coins (chocolate!) when they returned for the evening session.

In the evening, after our Sausage Sizzle with what seemed a never ending queue for food, the children watched the final part of the drama and found the pirates realising that by joining the King’s navy, they had everything that they had ever wanted and were not alone.

The presentation to a packed church followed with a synopsis of the days themes and activities and the final part of the bible input from ‘Captain Book’ where the memory verse from Philippians 3:8 was identified as the clue on the treasure map which says ‘Nothing is as good as knowing Christ Jesus as Lord’.

Dan Wicks and his team of face painters provided some further atmosphere on the final evening painting the faces of any children (or adults) as pirates with black eyes, bruises, beards and moustaches for £1 in aid of Future Links. A further collection was made over the course of the week by asking the children to drop any spare coppers each day into our ‘Treasure Chest’. The total amount from both the above came to £132 which was presented with the collection on the following Sunday.

Many thanks to all the helpers and leaders – we hope you enjoyed the week and will help again next year when the theme will be Pyramid Rock and the dates for your diary are Tuesday 28th – Friday 31st August, hopefully in our newly refurbished Church and halls.
